Expansion passes. DLC. The modern gaming experience doesn’t end at the initial launch of a title, and believe it or not, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the first mainline game in the Zelda franchise to offer DLC. Also, both Hyrule Warrior games also provided DLC. While there has been no mention of an expansion pass for the up and coming Skyward Sword HD that releases this Friday, July 16th (and I wouldn’t expect to hear news on that so soon), it’s a worthwhile topic to discuss.
DLC for Skyward Sword HD is very possible. Nintendo already has put so much work into this game. It’s not just a port; Nintendo made several lifestyle adjustments and jumped through logistical hoops to make motion controls an option. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Nintendo put additional hours into some form of an expansion pass. It got me thinking, if one were to come out, what would I want in a Skyward Sword HD DLC?
One thing that made The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword unique for its time was that Zelda was undergoing her own journey at the same time as Link. She wasn’t kidnapped and held prisoner from start to end. This provided a welcome change in pace from the damsel in distress trope, and I’m not the only fan in recent years expressing a desire to play as Zelda.
I will hold back on spoilers in case we have new fans that will be playing the HD release as their first Skyward Sword experience; however, I will say that Link is always searching for Zelda after she was taken from the sky. While Link ventures to power up the Master Sword, Zelda, too, must go through trials and tribulations to fulfill her role. What if Nintendo provided us with DLC where you play Zelda’s side of the story? Perhaps we could explore different portions of the temples and solve puzzles with her harp that could impact Link’s progress.
Fans have long asked if/when fans could play as Zelda. While we don’t know if that will ever happen, I think a Skyward Sword HD DLC featuring a bite-size adventure with Zelda would both satisfy that itch and act as a test to see if that option would be worth investing in for future Zelda titles.
Not quite convinced about purchasing Skyward Sword HD? In case you missed it, here is the trailer displaying the quality of life updates that have been made:
