Boss Rush Banter: What New Feature Should Mario Kart 9 Bring to the Franchise?

In case you missed it, last week an ‘industry insider’ claimed that Mario Kart 9 was in active development and that the game would feature a new twist to the series. While it is no surprise that Nintendo is working on a sequel to one of their best-selling games of all time, it is nevertheless exciting to speculate on what the new entry might bring. What twist do you think Nintendo should include in their upcoming sequel?

We know for a fact that with a new entry in the series, there will be new tracks and new karts. That’s a no-brainer. And though this new game might borrow from previous games, I don’t think the rumored twist is something that has already been done in a Mario Kart game, such as Double Dash‘s two-driver gimmick or the anti-gravity levels in Mario Kart 8. I think it’s clear that this twist is something that has not ever been done in a Mario Kart game.

Maybe they will take a page out of the recently released (and absolutely wonderful) Forza Horizon 5, and give Mario Kart 9 an open-world hub for karts to drive around on in-between races. Or what about a damage system that, after a few hits, requires players to make a pit stop and get their cars repaired? It could, however, be the long rumored addition of all Nintendo franchises and be more of a ‘Nintendo Kart’ than a true Mario Kart game, ala Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Regardless of what the twist is, this game is sure to be a monster release and will dominate sales for weeks and weeks on end. What do you think the twist should be? What would you love to see in the upcoming game? Let us know in our Discord or Facebook group!
