Boss Rush Banter: What is Your Favorite Sonic the Hedgehog Game?

It’s been just over 20 years since our second and last Sonic Adventure title hit North American stores. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is one of the few 3D titles most fans of the blue blur tend to remember fondly. The nostalgic Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania might also come to mind. It also introduced everyone’s favorite edgy counterpart Shadow the Hedgehog.

Since its release, Sonic’s core gameplay and design have gone relatively untouched (outside of the critically reviled Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric). The world constantly shifts around this character as he makes new friends and enemies. It’s an odd series that makes huge leaps in one department while falling flat on its face in another with every release.

Sonic Unleashed, largely considered a joke due to the Werehog with Mr. Fantastic powers, made significant improvements to the character animations during both gameplay and cutscenes. Sonic Colors is widely considered a solid entry in the franchise, or it would be if it weren’t riddled with bugs and glitches. Sonic Mania took the series back to its roots in 2D platforming with loads of additional character animations, and the list goes on.

Personally, I was one of the 12 people in my state that owned a SEGA Dreamcast, so the original Sonic Adventure holds a special place in my heart despite some pretty janky animation and voice acting. It was the first Sonic game I played where I understood the world (slightly) beyond Sonic and Dr. Robotnik.

It all comes down to what you value whether it’s story, gameplay, or animation. What’s your favorite Sonic the Hedgehog game? Tell us why in the comments below or on the BossRush Discord!
