E3 Convention Officially Cancelled for 2022, Expected to Return

Shocking news from Will Powers, a prominent figure from a number of video games companies: E3 will not happen this year in any form.

This news is evolving as we publish. Notably, Stephen Totilo, former editor-in-chief of Kotaku and author of the Axios Gaming newsletter, has tweeted out a screenshot of an email that seems to clarify that only the 2022 event is cancelled, and that E3 will return with new vigor in 2023. Totilo’s tweet cites the email as coming from the ESA (Entertainment Software Association).

While game developers and publishers have gradually moved toward handling major release announcements and trailers using their own channels, E3 plays an historic role in how video games culture grew out of its origins as a niche hobby and came into the mainstream. Boss Rush will update as the news develops.

Do you hope to see E3 return? What should its role in the industry become? Let us know in the comments or over at the Boss Rush Discord!
