Netflix announced on Monday that the popular Xbox gaming franchise Gears of War will be adapted for a live action film, followed by an animated series sometime in the future.
The news comes on the 16th anniversary of the first Gears of War game releasing for the Xbox 360.
No further announcements were given in terms of casting, release dates, or who would be writing and directing, but the Gears series has long been a favorite of gamers for having a potential film adaptation.
As for the animated series, Netflix has found great success with numerous video game animated tv shows, such as Castlevania, The Cuphead Show, Arcane (based on League of Legends), and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Although based more on the acclaimed book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf also released last year just prior to the second season of The Witcher live action show.
Gears of War is a series of third-person shooters first developed by Epic Games and created by industry icon Cliff Bleszinski. Beginning with Gears of War 4 in 2016, the franchise has been lead by developer The Coalition. The main premise of the franchise is the conflict between humanity and an army of underground, Orc-like creatures called the Locust Horde.
Do you think Gears of War will make for a good live action movie, and/or animated series? Do you believe Netflix will continue its run of successful adaptations with this one? We want to hear your thoughts in the comments below and on our social media channels!
