Boss Rush Banter: Will the Baten Kaitos Series Receive the Xenoblade Treatment?

In 2003 I walked into Target and picked up Baten Kaitos Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean for the Nintendo GameCube. I would like to say I went home and started playing, but I went to Toys R Us right next door and saw the same game, however it came with an exclusive soundtrack, but it cost ten dollars more. So, of course I bought it and immediately went back to Target and returned the other copy. A great decision since this game became one of my top 5 games.

A second game came out from Monolith Soft in 2006 titled Baten Kaitos Origins and was another great game in the series, but I didn’t realize that this would be the last game to come out in the series to date. Since this time, I have been waiting for some sort of news or glimmer of hope to receive some word of a new or remade game. This finally came to fortition at Februaries Nintendo Direct with a HD remake of both games. This has given me hope of a potential revival in the series.

If we look back in the past, we see that another game by Monolith Soft on the Wii called Xenoblade Chronicles. This game only came to the USA because of Operation Rainfall, which was an initiative to bring this game as well as Pandora’s Tower and The Last Story to the west. It was successful and since then we have received Xenobloade Chronicles on the Wii, 3DS, and Switch, Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, 2: Torna the Golden Country, and 3.  Each game has been a success and has pushed the lore and history of this universe. So, could we see something similar with the Baten Kaitos series?

With the recent reveal of both games coming to the Nintendo Switch could we get a new game in the series? The game of course is an action RPG that utilizes essences that are housed in card form and when you battle you string together the numbered based cards to obtain higher attacking combos. The battle system, especially in The Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean game, was extremely fun and I would be delighted if we were to see a new game in the series with a similar, but updated system. This of course may not happen, but I do hope we see excellent ports of the HD remastered versions so that the Nintendo Switch base can give it a try and maybe fling this incredible series into what I hope receives similar treatment like the Xenoblade Chronicles series. I have hope, which makes me smile.

Do you think that the Baten Kaitos series will thrive on the Nintendo Switch? Have you played either of the original games on the GameCube? Do you like card -based games? Will you pick up the HD remastered games this summer? Let us know your thoughts on this series.
