If something’s the worst, it’s trash. If something’s the best, it’s fire. Put ’em together and you’ve got a trash fire. Sure the fumes are noxious, but it keeps you warm. And from that fire, let’s pull our hottest takes:
So, what game do you love that otherwise gets mocked, ridiculed, or acknowledged just long enough to be dismissed?
For me, it’s Battle Arena Toshinden. From 1995 on into more years than I should count, I was hopelessly devoted to the PlayStation 3D fighter. It was clearly an ersatz Virtua Fighter. And was absolutely busted in comparison to Tekken 2 on the same hardware only a year later. But instead of moving on to the Mishima family, I just kept signing up to help Eiji fight through the eponymous Battle Arena as he searched for his brother.
Eventually I moved on, but I can still remember telling a friend that Soulcalibur was just a Toshinden knock off. Yeesh. I had no idea Soul Blade had already been a contemporary to my beloved Battle Arena. Despite my chagrin, I love that game to this day.
What weeded out and unloved game do you carry a torch for? Tell us about it down in the comments or over at the Boss Rush Discord.
