We’re on the cusp of a huge autumn for video game releases. Pretty much every flavor of gaming has a hype factory operating at full capacity over at least one title. Highly anticipated sequels in the Spider-Man, Forza, and Assassin’s Creed franchises are crowding together. Long-in-the-making sequels like Alan Wake 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder are still managing to feel like they’ve come out of nowhere. And spiritual updates to gems that new fans may have missed like Lords of The Fallen and Sonic Super Stars are just waiting in the wings.
But in spite of the massive momentum those and even more upcoming titles have behind them, two already-available games are dominating the conversation: Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon and Baldur’s Gate 3. Both have superb pedigree behind them. And both seem to have pleased old fans and drawn in scads of new players alike. Both use play systems with stats, numbers, and text descriptions begging to be pored over. And both practically demand all of your free time. To the point where being first out the gate this fall (or late summer) may well affect whether avid gamers are ready for any of those upcoming titles upon release.
