With fifteen seasons and counting as dungeon master on Dimension 20 as well as numerous appearances DMing on other shows, Brennan Lee Mulligan has a solid deck of non-player characters (NPCs) to his credit. Some are made for laughs. Others are nuanced despite minor appearances or even soul-crushing BBEGs who leave players in absolute ruin in their wake, but none of his NPCs are better than the impresariex of the Gold Gardens, Garthy O’Brien.

Introduced in Fantasy High: Sophomore Year, Garthy is a Half-Orc Aasimar pirate who immediately makes those around them feel at home. Raised by a prior incarnation of Ayda Aguefort, they quickly won over our Intrepid Heroes, coming to their aid and providing sanctuary to them while they were within the pirate city of Leviathan. When the young teens need advice, Garthy put things in perspective in a calm and soothing tone. They were a wonderfully welcome voice of reason.

Their welcoming and accepting nature presents a warmth which only grows in the moments when they reveal hints of their past and the conflicted tragedy of loving someone who lives the rebirth cycle of a phoenix. The multiplicity of their character as well as the chaotic complexity of their backstory allows Garthy to easily enter different campaigns, making them a bastion of comfort whenever Garthy appears in Dimension 20.

Brennan has a talent for creating incredible characters. His villains, even at the lowest ranks of henchmen, are rarely two-dimensional, so it would be easy to claim Asmodeus from EXU: Calamity, Ayda Aguefort introduced in the same seasons as Garthy, or even Gilear who now has his own plush.

Despite all the competition, Garthy remains something incredibly special. They retain an incredible potential which never grows old. Considering their connections, Garthy will always be a welcome inclusion to any season of Dimension 20 set in the world of Spare.
