Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition is a fan-made patch designed to bring the classic game’s PC port into the modern era with a detailed, yet often light, touch. With its tenth update, the project is complete.

The source code for the early Silent Hill games was lost, which makes any kind of port difficult; yet the games also depended on PlayStation 2-specific hardware techniques for lighting, fog, and more effects. The game is, essentially, locked to the original hardware.

At least until the Enhanced Edition team worked to make many of the effects truly PC compatible, with fully correct textures: in addition to this, the game features HD visual output, HD-friendly fonts, restored shadows, fixed post-processing, and widescreen & high framerate support.

The final update fixes final bugs, such as texture overlaps and missing models.

“This update (Update#10) was planned by our own volition to be our final update for two years now,” wrote the Enhanced Edition team. “After working on the project for nearly seven years, we are satisfied with everything we wanted to develop and ultimately achieved for the game.”
