How to Use Genshin Impact’s Artifact Transmuter

Table of Contents:

Genshin Impact implemented the Artifact Transmuter into the game in 2024. The Transmuter allows for players to synthesize artifacts. This means that players can pick and choose the artifact set they want, the specific piece they need out of the set, and some of the substats on that piece. For more information about artifacts and how they work, check out the Boss Rush article, “How to Use Artifacts in Genshin Impact (A Beginner’s Guide).”

How to Obtain Artifact Transmuter

To obtain the Artifact Transmuter, players need to unlock Chapter IV of the Adventurer’s Handbook. Once players obtain 25 five-star artifacts, they will receive the Transmuter as a reward.

How to Use Artifact Transmuter

Once obtained, players can access the Artifact Transmuter in their inventory. It appears under the Gadget tab. There are two settings to the Transmuter: Artifact Definition and Artifact Extraction.

Artifact Definition is synthesizing the artifacts. First, players need to select the specific artifact set they want. They do not need to have the Artifact Domain unlocked to be able to synthesize from that set. Once the set has been selected, players then need to pick which artifact piece they want: Flower, Feather, Sands, Goblet, or Circlet.

With the Flower and Feathers, they both have fixed main stats or Main Affixes in the Transmuter. Players can choose two substats (Minor Affixes) to add onto the artifact. For Flowers and Feathers, it costs one Sanctifying Elixir to create.

Sands require two Sanctifying Elixirs to create an artifact. With Sands, players can change the Main Affix and two Minor Affixes into any stat they like which similarly happens with Circlets and Goblets. Circlets, however, require three Sanctifying Elixirs and Goblets require four.

How to Get Sanctifying Elixirs

There are multiple ways to gain Sanctifying Elixirs. The main method is through the Artifact Extraction. By sacrificing five-star artifacts, players can obtain Sanctifying Elixirs.

The best way for most players to use the Artifact Extraction is to sacrifice artifacts upgraded to level four. The reason behind this is because a majority of players rely on the first major upgrade at level four to obtain a fourth substat or roll into the first substat to decide an artifact’s worth. In order to be sacrificed, the five-star artifacts cannot be level zero. So, as long as they are above that, any level of five-star artifacts can be fed into the Transmuter. The method of using level four five-star artifacts is agreed to be the most effective method amongst the Genshin Impact community.

Players simply need to feed enough five-star artifacts into the Transmuter until the Extraction Progress reaches 100. Any value that goes beyond the 100 overflows into the next Extraction Progress cycle.

Players can also obtain Sanctifying Elixirs through the Battle Pass. It requires the paid Battle Pass in which players gain an Elixir at level 26. The regular Battle Pass unfortunately does not offer a Sanctifying Elixir.

There are three Sanctifying Elixirs that can be found in the overworld of Genshin Impact. Players need to gather Obsidian Fragments that are randomly given through chests in Natlan. There are three colors: yellow, green, and azure. When three fragments of the same color are combined, it becomes a colored Obsidian Ring that will open a secret chest for the corresponding color. These chests contain a Sanctifying Elixir.

When players level up the Tablet of Tona in Natlan, they can also obtain Sanctifying Elixirs. By offering Pyro Sigils to the Tablet, players level it up. Every ten levels grants players a Sanctifying Elixir. Since the Tablet maxes out at level 50, that means players can obtain a total of five Sanctifying Elixirs from this method.

Sanctifying Elixirs have also appeared as rewards in Limited-Time events. However, they have not consistently been a reward, so this isn’t a guaranteed method to gain these Elixirs.

Limitations

There are multiple limitations to the Artifact Transmuter. The first limitation is the cycle limit.

The Artifact Transmuter runs on a cycle of six weeks, essentially the duration every update of the game. Players can only obtain one Sanctifying Elixir per cycle. This means that if players only obtain Sanctifying Elixirs through the Artifact Extraction, to have enough for a Goblet, it requires 24 weeks for players to have enough Sanctifying Elixirs.

Another limitation to the Transmuter is that when using the Artifact Definition, players can create only one artifact per set in a cycle. This means, they cannot create a Feather and a Circlet from the same set in the same update. They have to wait for the next one.

The Artifact Transmuter also limits itself with how any artifact synthesized starts at level zero. Artifacts, when upgraded, select random substats to upgrade every four levels. However, starting in Version 5.5, the developers have announced they will guarantee two upgrades for the selected Minor Affixes when leveling up the artifact. That leaves at least two, if not three, chances for the Minor Affixes to not be upgraded when maxed to level twenty.

Additionally, there is no guarantee that the created artifact will have four substats. It is guaranteed to have three substats though. Why this number is important is that when the artifact first reaches level four, it will either add a substat to max out the artifact or, if the fourth substat exists already, will upgrade one of the substats. For players invested in character building, the difference between adding a substat and upgrading a substat during the first level can drastically change how valuable the artifact is for a character. This limitation is more for late-game players who are further building and upgrading their characters, essentially min-maxing their stats.

Conclusion

The Artifact Transmuter is a great step in Genshin Impact for easing the path for character building. It allows players to generate artifacts to better suit their characters without the lucky chance of encountering them in Artifact Domains. Although it has multiple limitations that inhibit the players’ abilities to utilize the Transmuter, it sets a starting point for easier artifact grinding in the game.
