Capcom on Thursday shadow dropped two classic PS1 era survival horror games on the Steam platform, giving PC players a chance to relive some prehistoric terror.
Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2 first arrived on the PS1 in 1999 and 2000 respectively, and combined the frights and gore of Resident Evil with sci-fi action more closely aligned with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter or Jurassic Park.
The series was created by legendary designer Shinji Mikami, who is most well-known for the Resident Evil series, but also the games Vanquish, God Hand, The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Hi-Fi Rush, and many more.
The original Dino Crisis has players control a special operations agent named Regina, who is among a team sent to investigate a research facility on a remote island that is overrun with flesh eating dinosaurs. The game it noteworthy for ditching the pre-rendered backgrounds popularized in Resident Evil and other survival horror titles at the time, and instead going with real-time 3D environments. Dino Crisis was a big success, selling over 2.4 million copies on the PlayStation, and later being ported to the Sega Dreamcast and Windows PC.
Dino Crisis 2 shifted to gameplay more reminiscent of action arcade titles, where players compete for high scores in short levels, and use the points generated as currency to purchase better equipment, stronger weapons, and additional supplies. Players will again control Regina, but can also choose to play as a new character, Dylan Morton, as the special agents travel back in time to stop the dinosaur threat for good, and work to return to the present.
Although both games had previously released on GOG last year, they were inexplicably removed shortly thereafter, and have only just returned, becoming available on Steam for the very first time.
To mark the occasion, both games are available at a 50% discount ($4.99 USD) on both GOG and Steam storefronts until February 26. Afterwards, the games will return to the full price of $9.99.
While this should be welcomed news for fans of the survival horror genre, many players are reporting difficulty running the games due to the use of DRM, causing the game to stutter frequently, if it runs at all.
Capcom recently replaced the Denuvo DRM for the Enigma DRM for their release of Resident Evil 4 Remake on Steam, which has also caused several issues for players, such as worsening the game’s performance, and hindering the ability to play it on Steam Deck.
It should be noted that both games are currently DRM free on GOG.
