Boss Rush Banter: Who’s The Best Puppy Pokémon?

I get some grief about loving Puppy Pokemon. Last week, during the Pokémon Direct, we met Generation 9’s Puppy Pokémon, Fidough. As someone who’s played since the beginning of the series, I’m always fascinated by what they will reveal.

This is what we know about Fidough so far.

“This Pokémon has smooth, moist skin with elastic qualities. They intimidate their opponents by puffing up their bodies to appear bigger.”

Some of my favorite Pokémon have been the puppy ones. In honor of us meeting Fidough, I wanted to walk through some of my favorites.

  1. Growlithe
Official Pokedex Entry

It has a brave and trustworthy nature. It fearlessly stands up to bigger and stronger foes.

Pokedex

#058

Type: Fire

Let’s go all the way back to Generation 1 and this beloved fire type. Grabbing one was always on my to-do list when I played through Yellow or later incarnations and remakes. Spunky and full of fire (literal and figurative), this remains a Pokémon that I have a soft spot for.

  1. Houndour

“It cooperates with others skillfully. When it becomes your partner, it’s very loyal to you as its Trainer and will obey your orders.”

Pokedex

#228

Type: Dark/Fire

One of the harder-to-get Pokémon, it’s one I’ve never personally trained. Most of the time, you cannot access it until later in the game and by then I’ve got a team that I’m sticking to.

  1. Lillipup

IT’S SO CUTE!!!!

I mean…

This Pokémon is courageous but also cautious. It uses the soft fur covering its face to collect information about its surroundings.

Pokedex

#506

Type: Normal

I had to include this one in the list. Look at it, it’s so cute!!!! I couldn’t bring myself to train one in the game because I rarely use Normal types as a rule. But on any list of Puppy Pokémon, this deserves a spot! I mean come on! Look how cute it is!

  1. Yamper
Pokedex

“This Pokémon is very popular as a herding dog in the Galar region. As it runs, it generates electricity from the base of its tail.”

Pokedex

#835

Type: Electric

Not only did we finally get a game with a UK-inspired game map, we got a Corgi Pokémon!!! I snatched this one up when I played Sword for the first time. Both it and its evolved form have their uses, especially in early gameplay when you don’t have many electric options.

These are just four of some of my favorite Puppy Pokémon. I’m curious what Fidough will bring to the table in November.

Great post! I’ve always been partial to the doggo Pokemon as well. I was a big fan of Rockruff and its Lycanroc’s Sun version. 🙂 And I know foxes don’t really count but since they’re dog adjacent, Alolan Vulpix has become my favorite Pokemon of all time. It’s too darn cute!
