How To Catch Every Unown in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Pokémon Shining Pearl

Number 201 in the National Pokédex is Unown, the symbol Pokémon! This Psychic-type Pokémon was first introduced to us in Pokémon Gold & Pokémon Silver and had 26 different forms representing each letter of the Latin alphabet for us to catch. In Pokémon Diamond & Pokémon Pearl, two new forms were introduced resembling a question mark and an exclamation point making a total of 28 forms. Unown has made a return in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Pokémon Shining Pearl, so here is a guide detailing what is required to catch ’em all!

“Shaped like ancient writing, it is a huge mystery whether language or Unown came first.”

Getting to Solaceon Ruins

After you’ve emerged from exploring Route 209, you will stumble upon Solaceon Town. This area is mostly known for the Pokémon daycare, but you’ll find a hidden path on the right side of town if you do a little more exploration. This path splits into three directions with the far-right leading to the Solaceon Ruins.

Exploring Solaceon Ruins

Upon entering the Solaceon Ruins, you’re greeted with an inscription on the wall featuring the Unown alphabet. This text gives you directions on which staircases to take to reach the bottom floor where you will find a room full of items to pick up. Even if you’re not here for the items, you’ll need to keep these directions in mind to capture all of the Unown forms. Other than the main entrance, each main entryway features Unown forms that will spell out the word “friend” if you catch them in order. To obtain the letter “F,” you will need to head into the room you reach by taking the stairs in the upper-right after entering the ruins. Going down to the next level, you’ll find the letter “R,” the following floor has “I,” and so on. The dead-end rooms contain the other twenty letters.

Catching the “!” and “?” Forms

You should have 26 different forms of Unown by now, but there are still 2 left to find! If you noticed upon entering the Solaceon Ruins, there was a cave above the entrance. This area contains the “!” and “?” forms of Unown, but the other side to this cave is only accessible through Route 214. You’ll find this entrance on the left of the route immediately after leaving Veilstone City. If you’ve caught all 26 Unown, the ruin maniac will have dug his way to the room housing these last 2 Unown. If you haven’t collected every letter, he gradually digs his way through after catching each one.

You Did It!

You’ve reached the room containing the last two forms. All there is to do now is run around until you encounter both of them.

If you’ve managed to capture all of the Unown using this guide, let us know in the comments and feel free to share it to help others. If you’d like to share your progress on this journey, join our Discord and give us updates!
