A new trailer for Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes dropped today. It’s interesting to see how the hype cycle for that game contrasts so drastically with the sporadic updates for Breath of The Wild‘s sequel. Sure, Fire Emblem is no Zelda, and this musou spin off isn’t even a first party title. Yet, to the Fire Emblem fandom, it represents the only kind of new content they’ve had to count on. Unless you count the constant updates to the mobile game, Fire Emblem Heroes. Where information about Breath of The Wild 2 has hardly grown past “it exists,” Three Hopes was announced, given two trailers and a hard release date all within a few months.
Both situations have me wondering where true excitement and anticipation can be created. In Zelda‘s case, I think a lot of fans have been turned off by the ever-increasing wait times between titles. And in Fire Emblem‘s case, there’s been a total take over by a mobile game and a spin-off series with no mention of a new mainline game in sight. Even worse in Zelda‘s case is that it has its own musou spin-off as well that may serve to syphon off hope that new proper entries in the franchise could have arrived sooner.
Well, beggars can’t be choosers. And there are some amazing moments to choose from in the Three Hopes trailer. Would I rather have been surprised by a trailer for a new Fire Emblem TRPG? For sur! But I’m glad the game we’re getting instead has managed to find its way to us in spite of all the challenges the world is throwing at large scale projects these days.
