NIS is bringing two games to the West as part of its 30th anniversary celebration.
Nippon Ichi Software (NIS) hosted a stream commemorating its 30th anniversary on Jan. 30. The company announced via the stream the arrival of Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless and Rhapsody: Marl Kingdom Chronicles, which is a two-game collection, in the West.
Disgaea 7 will arrive on PlayStation 4 and 5, the Nintendo Switch, and PC in the summer of 2023 in Europe and the fall of 2023 in North America. Rhapsody: Marl Kingdom Chronicles is slated to arrive on the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC in the summer of 2023.
Disgaea 7 is a tactical role-playing game that carries forward many elements of the last six entries in the franchise. It will be set in the netherworld Hinomoto and will center on demon warrior Fuji and his companion Pirilika, a catgirl with a gun.
While there are many similarities to previous entries, there will be a new mechanic called Jumbability, allowing characters to grow to a large size and deal heavy damage. There is also an item reincarnation mechanic that allows players to level up their items into other objects.
Disgaea 7 will also feature a single-player mode as well as online multiplayer options.
Rhapsody: Marl Kingdom Chronicles will include the two sequels to Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. Those sequels include Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess (1999) and Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom (2000). Both games had not been released outside of Japan.
The sequels will undergo a makeover and will feature a 3D camera mode in Rhapsody III. The adventures focus on musical performances.
NIS originally incorporated in 1991 in Japan as an entertainment software company called Prism Kikaku. It reincorporated in 1993 as NIS and began developing video games.
It’s primary focus in games are RPGs, mostly tactical RPGs, with the Disgaea series being the company’s most prominent franchise. NIS opened its North American localization branch in 2003 to help bring games to the West.
NIS America has helped publish other franchises such as the Ys, Atelier, and Trails series, typically with other developers.
