How to Defeat Grate Guy and Knife Guy in Super Mario RPG

After ascending Booster Tower, you come face to face with your next boss. Well, bosses. Knife Guy and Grate Guy partner up against you while Booster steals Princess Peach away. While Super Mario RPG generally has reasonable boss fights, things can go sideways if you are careless. Here are tips on defeating this duo!

1. Grate Guy and Knife Guy have elemental weaknesses; however, they don’t share all the same ones

Knife Guy is weak against fire and resistant to lightning while Grate Guy is weak against lightning but resistant to fire. If you can keep that straight, you can focus Mario’s fireballs on Knife Guy and Mallow’s lightning attacks on Grate Guy. Both are also weak against Fear, Mute, and Poison but resistant to Sleep.

2. Deal as much damage to minimize their time combining forces

Generally speaking, Knife Guy and Grate Guy have low melee attacks when fighting individually. Grate Guy can inflict Mute or Sleep on your characters–so equip them with resistances if possible, because it can get quite annoying.

Occasionally, Knife Guy will hop on top of Grate Guy, and that’s where things can get a little hairy. Combo attacks include Blizzard, Crystal, and Meteor Blast.

I used Mario’s fireball attacks on Knife Guy, melee attacks from Bowser, and Mallow’s Shocker or Thunderbolt on Grate Guy. I preferred Thunderbolt, even though it won’t impact Knife Guy, as it costs less to cast and can still deal significant damage to Grate Guy.

3. Avoid having more than one teammate Muted and/or Asleep

Things tend to get most challenging when two of your teammates are asleep, for example. Just be present in the fight and take care of your friends when needed. Even non-boss fights can be tough when only one character is left to fight.

Follow these three principles, and you will be on your way to savings Princess Peach from that wierdo, Booster. Cheers!
