Boss Rush Banter: The Best Way to Enjoy Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation has recently reemerged into the public consciousness. The game celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, it served as one of the core inspirations for Alien: Romulus, and an ongoing critical appreciation has called some initial professional reviews into question.

However, some highly visible sources offer unhelpful, inaccurate, or simply fun-destroying tips on how to play the game.

Following these tips, you’ll enjoy the best way to play Alien: Isolation.

Play on hard. The xenomorph AI doesn’t work properly on lower levels. This doesn’t make the game easier. While the xenomorph is less interested in you, it’s more likely to patrol critical paths and is much harder to bait (something you have multiple tools to help manage). Playing on hard isn’t only the intended way to experience the game, it’s the most enjoyable way to play the game. The scares land, the xenomorph feels uncannily intelligent, and your tools work in reliable ways.

Keep moving, and keep quiet. Don’t move from locker to locker, sealed hiding place to sealed hiding place. It’s not only boring, and slow, the xenomorph will learn your tricks. It’s possible to make the xenomorph so keenly aware you’re going for the locker that they end up unusable. Only use lockers if you’ve just made a loud noise, or if you’re being chased and have enough lead to slip inside unseen. Stay mobile, as that helps you stay ahead of the xenomorph, and rely on using environmental objects for cover. The game is built to facilitate this strategy.

Walk. You only need to crouch to keep out of sight. You can walk otherwise. However, running will alert your enemies.

Use your tools. Use items often, but not excessively. Even on hard, there is an abundance of crafting materials. It’s better to use an item to get out of a tight spot.

Weapons have utility. For example, the revolver is essentially useless in a fight. But it works well for environmental distractions. Keep an eye out for fire extinguishers or silver containers, you can shoot these for a distraction, or catch an enemy in the explosion to make it retreat (or cause significant damage).
