Back in June, our Intrepid Heroes took the stage in the Hollywood Bowl and returned to the world of Spyre for the Rumble in the Chungle. Chungledown Bim, who made his debut in Fantasy High: Sophomore Year and reappeared to cause havoc in the Time Quangle tour, is this one-shot’s BBEG. Though he’s haunted Fabian since sophomore year, even being written in to the terms of Fabian’s bank account which would give Chungledown Bim 18 million gold pieces in hopes of preventing Fabian from cashing out before leaving school. Though a warlock of humble pirate beginnings, his tenacity and determination to “shit in [Fabian’s] mouth” has left a horrifying scar across Fabian’s psyche.

As summer vacation starts, Riz presents Fabian with the results of his work. Unfortunately, despite watching Gilear for seventy-two hours, Riz found nothing evil to help to convince Fabian’s mother to not marry the accident-prone elf. However, Hallariel reaffirms her love for Gilear. She also reconfirms that she is with child, only making Fabian all the more determined to break them up. This, of course, enrages Fig. Ever the faithful paramour, Ayda rallies the rest of the Bad Kids.

As Fig confronts Fabian, the rest of the Bad Kids gather, and dark clouds roll in as Fabian’s crystal buzzes, announcing an approaching nemesis right before Chungledown Bim reveals himself. Bim rages, blaming Fabian for leading the Cult of Bill Seacaster to their graves. Kristen blesses Fabian as Gorgug warns him not to fight Bim one-on-one. Cackling, Chungledown Bim casts a spell, transforming everyone except Fabian into a pirate version of themselves. Riz attempts to resist. Despite himself, he lunges at Fabian. Murph crits, and Fig lands an attack right after.

Adaine manages to partially resist, casting flight to help Fabian flee, but then the spell forces her to eat a bush. Kristen completely resists. She dispels magic on Gorgug, likely saving Fabian’s life.

Fabian and Gorgug rush away. They fly through the sky, going to Basrar’s Soda Fountain. When Fabian mentions Chungledown Bim, Basrar vanishes. An almost touching moment with Fabian and Gilear goes south, leading to Fabian hanging up on the elf. They call for aid, finding no one before Riz tracks them down, throwing barrels and making Donkey Kong references. The Hangman arrives just in time, dispelling magic and saving Riz.

Meanwhile, a dirty twenty allows Kristen dispels, allowing Riz to compel duel and flee. Fabian attacks. Thanks to a 2020 decision by Lou, Bim’s armor class is 14, allowing Fabian to hit on a two and a four. Unfortunately, Bim strikes back, knocking Fabian unconscious and leaving him on death’s doorstep. Bill Seacaster visits his darling boy, but the hellish captain requires even his son to pay. Luckily, Gorgug brings him back.

Kristen frees Adaine, who immediately wrecks Chungledown Bim. This gives Fig a chance, and she partially frees herself, putting all the Bad Kids back into action. She absolutely smites the collapsed warlock pirate. Popping out of hiding, Riz shoots the incapacitated Bim.

With the Hangman, Fabian kills Chungledown, taking the time to visit upon the pirate the fate which he had repeatedly threatened. Was it necessary? No. Did they risk an unnecessary disaster? Yes, but that’s how the Bad Kids work. Fabian should’ve seen Maisy showing up, and even the positive words don’t change the disaster that was.

But in the end, we’re finally free of Chungledown Bim.

Highlights

I absolutely loved seeing Brennan in cosplaying, waving his hat on stage as the BBEG.

I would’ve loved them to address if the curse will pass on to Gilear’s child when he dies or is the bad luck that has returned a sign the curse will end with him, but honestly, it felt like Fabian inherited the bad luck this show.

Final Score (3 out of 5 Stars)

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Ally’s early move to dispel magic on Gorgug was key. Without that, Fabian wouldn’t have had a chance. Despite their excitement to betray him, the other Bad Kids rallied around him, supporting Fabian in his growth and in his rage.

Honestly, I’m also glad to get the shit-obsessed pirate behind us. It was a messy, dirty end, but there was never another ending. Though there were some good moments, I feel I made the right decision to wait until this came out rather than getting a ticket. This was not nearly as good as the Time Quangles tour. Still, watching it has me pumped for Fantasy High: Senior Year whenever it will come out. Short or long, serious and hilarious, there’s never a truly bad show when it comes to our Intrepid Heroess.
