The theatrical release for Predator: Badlands has been a major success by almost any measure; as of mid-November, the film has earned $136.3 million, surpassing its production costs while earning high marks from fans and critics alike. Dan Trachtenberg has made it known that he has another idea for a Predator film, but has declined to reveal more information at this time.
This got me thinking about what I’d like to see from the next Predator movie. Given that Trachtenberg has created a traditional franchise film with Prey, an animated anthology with Predator: Killer of Killers, and the non-traditional story in Predator: Badlands, I can’t help but think his next installment could (and should?) be an AVP film. Both Trachtenberg and Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez have said their dream AVP film would be one that fans wouldn’t know what was in store until the unexpected appearance of the monster on screen, meaning the crossover would be a surprise. If this is to be the case, I hope that film is the next one we see.
My dream film would include (at long last) the Colonial Marines. Fans have never received an encore for these legendary soldiers; it’s been since James Cameron’s Aliens that movie-goers have been treated to skilled professionals fighting against the Xenomorphs—and we’ve NEVER seen them in action against the Yautja. Trachtenberg has demonstrated a willingness to take big swings, while showing that he understands what fans want. I believe this makes him the ideal candidate to tackle the Colonial Marines, something most directors have been too scared to do, perhaps out of fear of comparison to an all-time great in Cameron.
What do you want out of the next Predator film from Dan Trachtenberg?
