Introduction
Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven is a bold and chilling expansion to the beloved roguelite cult management game Cult of the Lamb. What first grabbed my attention was the sudden shift from the base game’s cozy cult vibes to a frozen mountain expedition — and the promise of new mechanics like ranching and survival elements in a harsh winter environment. If you thought managing sheep and rituals were wild before, wait until you face freezing temperatures and mysterious mountain spirits.

Synopsis
Woolhaven sends the Lamb to a frozen mountain settlement long abandoned and overtaken by corruption. An ancient god known as Yngya lies dormant, and the spirits of Woolhaven’s past inhabitants linger, awaiting restoration. As the Lamb, players must rebuild the fallen settlement, guide lost souls, and uncover the secrets buried beneath the ice, all while confronting a creeping corruption known as the Rot.
The expansion deepens the base game’s mythology by introducing a new region with its own history, culture, and spiritual rules. Woolhaven isn’t just another location — it’s a place that feels haunted by its past, where every structure and relic tells a story of what was lost. As you restore the town, you slowly reveal the tragedy behind the settlement’s downfall and the true nature of the deity you’re trying to awaken.
The story expands the game’s mythology without overwhelming players unfamiliar with the deeper lore, offering a narrative that feels both meaningful and accessible. It also adds emotional weight to your decisions, because the choices you make aren’t just about power or survival — they shape the fate of the followers and the destiny of the mountain itself.
Analysis
Gameplay
The DLC introduces survival-focused mechanics that significantly change how players manage their cult. Cold weather, blizzards, and environmental hazards force you to think more carefully about resource allocation and follower well-being. New structures and systems are designed to keep followers warm, fed, and loyal under extreme conditions. A major addition is the ranching system, which allows players to raise animals for wool, food, and other resources. This mechanic fits naturally into the cult management loop and adds a new layer of strategy without feeling overly complex.
After spending roughly four hours with the game, what surprised me most was how much content there is to unlock. Progression never feels static—new systems, structures, and rewards are consistently introduced, expanding both combat and cult management in meaningful ways. Base management becomes increasingly layered as new buildings, upgrades, and systems unlock at a steady pace, especially those tied to survival and follower well-being. Managing followers starts to feel more personal as their individual needs and traits influence daily decisions, while the ranching system continues to add depth by providing resources and expanding how the cult functions.
One of the most shocking unlocks I encountered was a new doctrine that allows followers to consume another follower. It’s genuinely unsettling, even by Cult of the Lamb standards, and it caught me completely off guard. The mechanic leans hard into the game’s dark humor and moral discomfort, forcing players to confront just how far they’re willing to go in the name of efficiency or devotion. Rather than feeling gratuitous, it reinforces the DLC’s themes of corruption and control, leaving a lasting impression long after the initial shock wears off.

Story & Mechanics
Woolhaven strikes a strong balance between narrative expansion and mechanical depth. The new story elements integrate smoothly with gameplay, reinforcing the Lamb’s role as both a cult leader and a reluctant savior. The expansion’s setting feels like its own living ecosystem—haunted, broken, and waiting to be restored—so every new story beat comes with a sense of purpose and consequence.
New dungeon areas introduce enemies corrupted by the Rot, offering fresh combat challenges that complement the game’s existing roguelite structure. These zones are not just tougher; they’re designed to feel thematically aligned with the DLC’s darker tone. The Rot isn’t just a story element — it actively influences the gameplay, making every exploration feel tense and unpredictable.
Another surprising addition is the introduction of Sin, a mechanic that adds a darker and more chaotic layer to cult management. Sin allows you to unlock new features tied to your temple and opens up unexpected possibilities, including followers producing eggs and making beer for your followers, courtesy of the Drinkhouse. The system feels intentionally unhinged in the best way, reinforcing the game’s theme of moral ambiguity and control. It also changes how you plan your cult’s progression, because the benefits of Sin often come with risks or consequences that force you to decide what you’re willing to sacrifice for power.
Overall, the expansion does a solid job of making its mechanics feel purposeful rather than gimmicky, especially for returning players. The new systems aren’t just added for novelty—they enhance the cult management loop in ways that feel meaningful, making the DLC feel like a true evolution of the base game rather than a simple add-on.

Graphics & Art Style
Visually, Woolhaven maintains Cult of the Lamb’s distinctive art style while introducing colder color palettes and snowy environments that feel both beautiful and haunting. The expansion leans into its winter setting, using frosty tones, icy textures, and snow-covered ruins to create a stark contrast with the warmer, more inviting spaces of the cult’s base. That contrast makes the mountain landscape feel genuinely hostile, while the cult interiors feel even cozier and more precious by comparison.
I was honestly blown away by the art direction and the quality of the cutscenes. The visuals are not just charming—they’re cinematic, with a level of detail and personality that makes each new area feel like a fully realized world. The cutscenes in particular stand out, delivering story moments with strong emotional impact and a visual flair that matches the game’s dark, whimsical tone. Even in a game known for its stylized aesthetic, Woolhaven manages to raise the bar, making the expansion feel like a visually rich upgrade rather than a simple extension.
Character designs and environmental details remain expressive and cohesive with the base game’s aesthetic, while still offering enough new visuals to make the DLC feel fresh. Overall, the art style and presentation are a major highlight, and they help make the mountain setting feel unforgettable.
Performance
From a technical perspective, the game performed smoothly throughout my time with it. Dungeon runs, base management, and transitions between areas all felt responsive, with no noticeable frame drops or major bugs during my play sessions. Load times were reasonable, and performance remained consistent even as more systems and unlockables were introduced, allowing the experience to remain immersive and uninterrupted.

Final Score
After several hours of play, the depth of unlockable content became one of the game’s strongest qualities. The constant introduction of new mechanics, systems, and rewards keeps progression engaging and prevents the experience from feeling repetitive. While the sheer number of unlocks can feel overwhelming at times, the game does a solid job of pacing its systems and encouraging experimentation. Combined with smooth performance and a compelling blend of narrative and management gameplay, the DLC offers a rewarding experience that feels substantial even in its early hours.
