It’s no secret that Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, is a huge Destiny fan, clocking in over 2500 hours since its inception. In a recent interview with Forbes about a potential Halo crossover in Bungie’s shooter, Spencer discussed how he thought that today’s Xbox could have held onto the developer.

“We’ve learned a lot”, Spencer said, and noted that with Bungie’s big ambitions with Destiny they were “very aware” that at the time “Microsoft benefited more than Bungie did from the success of Halo“.
“If you’re saying, ‘Hey, I think I’ve got another one of those in me. I want to really take another chance,’ I can understand the allure of doing that as an independent company.”

Last year when Destiny 2 hit GamePass with it’s Beyond Light expansion, there was a rumor that Microsoft wanted to reacquire Bungie, though those rumors were heavily denied by Bungie CEO, Pete Parsons.
My Take
I think Bungie will always be connected to Xbox with the success of Halo alone. Even now as Halo Infinite approaches, fans are clamoring about how great it is to have a Halo game that feels like Bungie made it. Although I think it would have been a smart business decision for Xbox, I feel Bungie’s ambitions with Destiny are too big to contain to one console.
Ultimately, their partnership is still strong and I am happy to see them, for lack of better terms, play nice. Halo Infinite hits Xbox and GamePass on December 8 while Destiny 2‘s 30th Anniversary of Bungie hits all platforms on December 9th. I hope all of the rumors of a Halo crossover set of weapons and armor are true, which with all of the leaks, rumors, and investigation of data miners, it looks more likely than ever.
