Why I Came Back To PlayStation After Almost Two Decades Away

Growing up, my grandmother was the yard sale queen. She would be out hunting before I even thought of getting out of bed and finding unique treasures and deals. Thanks to her skills, my brother and I got the two consoles that we really started to game on.

For the sake of this article, we’re going to focus on the PlayStation (the OG one) that she found. It came with a handful of games, and honestly, except for three, I can’t tell you what they were. But I can tell you those three.

The original Spyro trilogy. My brother and I wore those discs out. His favorite was the Year of the Dragon, and mine was Ripto’s Rage. My apologies to the original, but I rarely played it.

While I’m a “playing for the fun of it” kind of gamer, my brother is a completionist. I can’t even begin to imagine how many hours he logged. But I know we had our unique memory cards for the files.

After the initial PlayStation, we migrated solely to Nintendo systems. A large part of that was Pokémon games on the Game Boy (my Game Boy Advance being the first console I ever bought with my money).

And for a long time, we were okay with that arrangement.

Until they announced the Reignited Trilogy, that is. I remember that announcement coming and my brother and I looking at each other and the looks on our faces.

We both knew we were going to be saving up for a PS4.

It took us months to put aside the money, but right around the release of the Reignited Trilogy, we split the costs of one.

And so it began again. Despite being a completionist, my little brother plays way faster than I do (it might also have something to do with my complete and utter lack of hand-eye coordination). He raced through Spyro The Dragon in the time it took for me to get through a quarter of the game.

Ignoring how happy we were to be playing these games, the release of Spyro Reignited Trilogy was a great time for my brother and me to bond over games we loved.

And it hooked us back into PlayStation. These days, we both have a PlayStation 5.

Was there a game that pulled you back to a console? I’d love to hear if you’ve got similar stories. Please share your thoughts on our Boss Rush Facebook Group or our Boss Rush Discord.
