Modiphius Entertainment – publishers of tabletop games like Achtung! Cthulhu, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, Conan, and Star Trek Adventures – is bringing Mike Rayhawks’ classic wargame BrikWars into print for the first time.

After Eric O’Dell and R. Todd Ogrin’s Warhammer 40k parody Legowars received a cease and desist order from the LEGO Group shortly after releasing its sequel, Rayhawks began assembling his own, truly legally distinct version of the rules. Rather than being focused solely on space-themed building sets, BrikWars incorporated all the chaos of the toybox: pirates, knights, and even city sets.

The game also embraces the inherent creativity of building block toys: you can build your own armies and your own vehicles – and, if you so choose, deconstruct units and forts as they take damage.

BrikWars began by word of mouth, passed from email to email around 1995. If you or your family were either sufficiently into LEGO or miniatures back then, it’s possible you received one of the many versions released. In this time, Chad Bagaasoc, an Oregon State University student, assembled the first “definitive” edition of the rules from the various incomplete and semi-homebrewed versions floating around the internet. In 1997, Rayhawks released the first official “definitive” edition. Further editions that may be described as “definitive” would follow, with the most recent version being BrikWars 2020.

In on the joke, Modiphius Entertainment describes this print version as the “official, revamped, edited, absolutely definitely the definitive, retail edition” of BrikWars.

Modiphius Entertainment describes the game’s set-up as:

The BrikVerse is dying. Plastic-brick models gather dust on bookshelves rather than smashing into each other or exploding even slightly. Their construction matches the photos on the box covers, without a single unexplained tentacle or hundred redundant laser cannons. Their pieces are banished from the floor, never to pierce an unsuspecting Human foot.

Common sense and quality building instructions are snuffing out everything construction-brick civilization stands for. Minifigkind cries out for a new breed of Hero, more irresponsible and ridiculous than ever before seen. Armed with nothing but fanatically devoted armies, a complete lack of survival instinct, and enormous piles of bricks, these mighty champions are called to push back the terrifying threat of Peace and save the minifig way of life.
