Star Ocean: The Second Story R Confirmed During Nintendo Direct

The leaks regarding Star Ocean: The Second Story R turned out to be true.

Square Enix confirmed the existence of the science fantasy remake during the June 21 Nintendo Direct, setting a Nov. 2 release date for the game. Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a remake of the 1998 action role-playing game, which was previously only on PlayStation consoles.

Earlier this month, a logo for the game leaked on Square Enix’s website. The leaked logo is almost identical to the one revealed during the Direct.

The new trailer showcased numerous features of the remake, including the art style. The game will combine 3D locations with 2D sprites as part of its unique style.

Along with enhanced graphics, the remake also features an upgraded combat system. Battles happen in real time, but there is also the opportunity to stun enemies via chain attacks. Players can also summon inactive party members for follow-up attacks.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R features two protagonists: Claude and Rena.

Claude is a recently commissioned Ensign from Earth who sets out on his first mission. While on a mission to examine a different planet, Claude is teleported to the planet Expel.

It is here that he meets local Rena, and the two set off on an adventure together. Players will have the option to play as either Claude or Rena, experiencing the story through their eyes.

The game will also include full Japanese and English voice overs; original and rearranged music; fast travel; and many other features. Square Enix calls this a great RPG for both newcomers and long-time fans.

While the announcement of the game happened during the Nintendo Direct, the remake will also release on PlayStation 4 and 5 as well as PC via Steam.
