Chrono Trigger is widely accepted as the greatest RPG in history of the genre.
So, where is it?
Finding the SNES classic legitimately is really difficult outside of PC and mobile options. The most recent console rerelease came in 2011 via the PlayStation Network, making it available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable.
The game also saw a rerelease on the DS in 2008 as well as in 2011 on the Wii’s Virtual Console. Other than that, there is no other options for playing the game.
What makes that more disheartening is the release of Star Ocean: The Second Story R and the tidbits of updates we get for the Dragon Quest 3 remake. These games look gorgeous in their updated art styles and it’s high time Chrono Trigger get it too.
Game preservation is always discussed, but many don’t seem to abide by it. Seeing these updated remakes that aim to stay true to the original is always a welcome change.
There are many, like myself, who haven’t had the chance to enjoy Chrono Trigger. I want to see what the hype is all about, but I don’t have the means to do it.
The success of Star Ocean: The Second Story R shows there is a path to balancing a game steeped in nostalgia while updating it for modern audiences.
I have always thought that it is worth the effort to remake these classic games for modern audiences. The feedback to the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection shows that simple ports aren’t enough.
While it’s nice to have those ports, upgrading the art and mechanics for modern audiences helps with making the game more accessible for newcomers awhile providing a new experience for veterans.
I get the sentiment that Chrono Trigger is perfect as is and doesn’t need a remake. There’s nothing wrong with the purist approach to a game. That’s why I think taking the approach of Star Ocean is the best option as it can help retain the retro feel while giving it a fresh coat of paint.
There have been rumors of a potential Chrono Trigger remake in development, but that’s not concrete. Until we get official word, RPG fans can continue to wait.
