I came to be a Percy Jackson fan a bit later. Throughout a weekend where I was sick in bed, I poured over the five books and came to really enjoy the story. Before I could watch the movies, I had several people warn me away.
According to them, they were horrible adaptations and got a lot wrong. Most importantly, they got the ages of the leads wrong. For the record, Percy Jackson states his age on the second page of the first book – you do not have to look hard for that.
When Disney cast Walker Scobell to play the titular role, I saw it as a positive step in the right direction. He is the right age, and as the first few episodes air, I saw him breathe such life into the role. Paired with Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover, these three kids carry this series that remains light, fresh, and a solid adaptation of their source material.

It’s not just the casting of our three heroes that makes this stand out.
Last week’s episode, “We Visit The Garden Gnome Emporium,” brought other brilliant casting choices to light.
When Jessica Parker Kennedy walked on as Medusa, I was blown away by her performance. The subtle way she played the role really made it shine.

Having seen her in other roles, the role of Medusa allowed Kennedy to shine in subtle ways I hadn’t seen from her previously.
Then, this week, we arrived at the halfway point of the first season with “I Plunge to My Death.”

This featured Suzanne Cryer as Echidna. From the moment she appeared on the screen, her performance, like Jessica Parker Kennedy’s, lit up the episode without overpowering it.
Having seen these two roles and with half the season, I’m excited to see where this show goes. I’m excited to see which unexpected role shines through the actor’s writing and performance.
For me, two things make Percy Jackson shine. The writing and how the actors elevate that writing into something special. Patience paid off for Percy Jackson fans with this adaptation.
I’m excited for the second half of the season.
