Little Mermaid, Disenchanted Get Trailers During Disney Live-Action D23 Expo Presentation

There are a host of live action Disney and 20th Century Studios projects on the horizon, many of which were on display during the D23 Expo.

The D23 Expo was at the Anaheim Convention Center near Disneyland in Southern California. The event is a fan experience where Disney and its subsidiaries provide information and trailers via presentations.

Disney showcased several trailers and updates on future products both from its live-action slate as well as on the upcoming Avatar movie. Here’s what happened during the presentation:

  • Disney released a new trailer for the upcoming sequel Hocus Pocus 2. This production will drop on Disney Plus on Sept. 30.

  • Disney is continuing The Santa Clause franchise with The Santa Clauses and will feature Tim Allen in the titular role. The presentation featured a trailer to prepare fans for the two-episode premiere on Nov. 16.

  • Disenchanted, a sequel to the 2007 film Enchanted, got a trailer ahead of its Nov. 24 release on Disney Plus.

  • The first trailer for National Treasure: Edge of History dropped during the presentation. The series will have a two-episode premiere on Dec. 14 on Disney Plus.
  • Director James Cameron shared some exclusive footage of the upcoming sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. The crowd viewed the footage through 3D glasses. The movie is set to release on Dec. 16.
  • Disney released its first trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, which featured Halle Bailey as Ariel singing Part of Your World. The cast for this movie includes Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Joseph Hauer-King as Prince Eric, and Awkwafina as Scuttle. The movie is set to release May 26, 2023.

  • Disney is rebooting the Haunted Mansion with a new film set for Aug. 11, 2023. So far, Jamie Lee Curtis will appear as Madame Leota. This movie will draw inspiration from the Disney Parks ride.
  • The presentation also featured a trailer for Peter Pan and Wendy. This live-action movie will feature Jude Law as Captain Hook. It will release sometime in 2023 on Disney Plus.
  • The live-action adaptation of Snow White got a first look, featuring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the evil queen. The movie is slated for March 22, 2024.
  • Disney provided more details on the prequel Mufasa: The Lion King from director Barry Jenkins. This movie will follow the same format as the live action adaption of The Lion King and will center on Mufasa’s life as he grew up. Release is set for July 5, 2024.
  • Disney provided a trailer for the upcoming eight-episode Disney Plus show Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The show is based on Rick Riordan’s novels of the same name. No definitive date has been set for the series.
