The clock has begun on the countdown to The Mandalorian Season 3.
Disney announced a March 1, 2023 release date on Disney Plus during its panel at Comic Con Experience 2022 in São Paulo, Brazil. This announcement follows the teaser trailer Disney released back in September during the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.
This release date ends an almost two-year drought of The Mandalorian as the second season of the show ended in December 2020.
Season 3 will pick up after the events of the spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett, which told the story of the eponymous bounty hunter and weaved in a continuation of The Mandalorian’s storyline.
The Mandalorian will also build on the first two seasons of its original series, which is set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi. Jon Favreau, director of 2008’s Iron Man, created the series in 2019 as part of the launch of Disney Plus.
The third season will follow the adventures of the bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young companion Grogu, colloquially known as Baby Yoda. This upcoming season will focus on Djarin’s mission to redeem himself after he removed his helmet in the second season, a violation of the Mandalorian creed.
The trailer for the third season included looks at Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), and Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito).
During the D23 Expo, Esposito teased the character showing a new side unseen in previous appearances. Gideon was the leader of an offshoot faction that was a remnant of the fallen Galactic Empire.
The Mandalorian has landed well with fans and critics alike, which has spawned several upcoming spinoffs such as Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew.
It’s always nice to get a concrete release date on an upcoming series. Disney and Lucasfilm have provided a significant amount of Star Wars content recently with Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi, both of which are set outside The Mandalorian’s story arc.
It’s always smart to take a break from a long-running story to prevent oversaturation. This is true for Star Wars as The Book of Boba Fett got a lackluster showing among critics and fans.
Still, it’s exciting to see Djarin and Grogu return and where the pair will take us in the galaxy.
