The PAX Rising Showcase is smack dab in the middle of the Exhibit Hall, and it featured games curated by the PAX team. Naturally, it was packed, but I was more than happy to squeeze in and observe. One title that caught my eye was Throne of Bone, and I was grateful to bump into the duo behind the game.
Windmill Slam is the studio behind Throne of Bone, and this is how they describe their game:
Draft minions to defeat all who oppose the honest work of necromancy. Learn spells, forge relics, and restore your castle to unite the land through undeath in this unholy amalgam of roguelike and autobattler.

The two-developer team first met virtually and were both present at PAX East 2024, eager to talk about Throne of Bone. The art was the first to catch my attention, and the inspiration leaned toward dark fantasy, with touch of cute-sy. The dev behind to gameplay explained how autobattlers used to be an incredible niche genre of deck-building games, but he hopes that Throne of Bone makes it more accessible to a wider audience.
We both agreed we are at a “golden age” of card games, both table-top and in video games–kickstarted by titles such as Slay the Spire and Inscryption. Titles like that provided the greatest affordance and now Windmill Slam hopes to do the same for the autobattling kind.
When I asked what some of the challenges they encountered were, they answered: balance. They wanted to cater to the hard cord card gamers but also be welcoming to those new to the genre. Their Discord community proved to be invaluable with feedback that the devs took to heart in order to perfect Throne of Bone.
You can Wishlist Throne of Bone on Steam here. You can also download a demo to try today! Early access will be available April 8th.
