How To Play Marvel Snap: A Beginner’s Guide

Mobile gaming has come a long way since the advent of the smart phone, but Marvel Snap feels like a throwback to yesteryears.

The deck-building game officially launched in late 2022 and has carved out its niche among diehards and casual players alike. Not only that, its streamlined gameplay makes it the perfect way to kill five minutes or occupy your entire train commute.

Marvel Snap continues to refresh itself by adding in new cards and locations, making now the perfect time to jump in if you haven’t already.

In this article, we’re going to review the basics and provide some tips to get you started on your Marvel Snap journey. Marvel Snap is available on both mobile and PC.

The Basic Premise of Marvel Snap

Marvel Snap is a deck-building game where you assemble 12 cards that feature various Marvel characters. Each card consists of a power, a cost, and an effect or lack thereof.

Players compete over six turns on a playing field that has three locations. The locations are gradually revealed over the first three turns. Each location will have an effect that will initiate once it is revealed.

Each turn, you are given energy that corresponds to the turn and you can play cards that fit within that energy total.

For example, if it is turn 3, you’ll get three energy points and you can play any card that’s costs add up to three. This means you can play a 2-cost and a 1-cost card; three 1-cost cards; or a 3-cost card.

Along with the cost is the card’s power. The object is to have a higher power total than your opponent at a minimum two of the three locations.

The premise may seem simple, but there are a few other factors that help spice up gameplay.

Card and Location Effects

Each card will either have an “On Reveal” effect, an “Ongoing” effect, a regular effect, or no effect at all.

Once you play your cards, their effects will activate at the end of the turn. On Reveal effects happen immediately after their reveals while Ongoing effects run through the duration of their time on the field.

Regular effects don’t have the classification of either On Reveal or Ongoing, but act in a similar manner. This is important because some cards have effects that only impact On Reveal or Ongoing cards, so not having a distinction adds to the strategy.

Some cards have no effects and are just there to add power to a location. That said, these cards can be the recipients of other effects that directly impact non-effect cards.

Each location also has an effect. While they don’t have the distinction the cards do, they do act similarly. Some effects happen immediately while others are ongoing and some happen at a specific point in the game.

These effects are where you will utilize strategy to win two of the three locations. Every player has their preferences and will gravitate to that preferred method.

Betting With Cubes

Now you have the general idea of how to play the game, but the fun doesn’t stop there. It’s time to talk about the eponymous snap.

In each game, you are playing for cubes. The amount of cubes you can win depends on both players and their desire to snap. A snap is just a button the player pushes to bet more cubes.

If no player snaps, then the maximum the winner will take away is two cubes. If one player snaps, that total jumps to four and if both players snap, the total is eight.

A player can snap at any point of the game and the amount of cubes a player can win if the game ended right that second is displayed at the top. As the game progresses the cubes increase to the final total.

Betting cubes doesn’t mean you have to play to the end and suffer the full loss. If you see the writing on the wall and there is no way to win, then you can escape and cut your losses. This feature comes in handy if you end up snapping only to get a bum draw.

Cubes allow you to increase your ranked level. Each new level allows you to win a prize and helps match you with players of similar abilities. Prizes are themed to the ongoing monthly season.

Game Modes

Marvel Snap offers you a variety of ways to play the game.

You can play one-on-on with various players by clicking “Play” on the main menu. This will match you with another player for a competition. Along with winning cubes from this matchup, you can obtain boosters that allow you to upgrade the look of cards.

There is also a Friendly Battle mode that allows you to connect with friends for a casual battle against them instead of a random player.

Conquest mode allows you to battle opponents in higher stakes contests. Here, each player starts with a set amount of special cubes and you keep playing games until one of you losses all their cubes. The winner gets medals that can be exchanged for prizes in the medal shop.

The game will have daily missions as well as tasks that align with the monthly season. You can complete these missions during any play style and they yield both credits and experience points.

Your experience points allow you to climb the specific ladder of prizes relating to the monthly season. Some prizes are locked behind the paywall of the season pass but there are free prizes on this ladder.

The more XP you gain, the more prizes you can obtain, regardless of if you paid or not.

Obtaining More Cards

Another way Marvel Snap is interesting is it is always generating new cards. This allows for a refresh on decks regularly or enhancing one that may seem set.

Players will initially get cards to build a simple deck but there are a few options to obtain more cards.

The first is through the collection levels. You can access collection levels via a green box with a number in it beneath your avatar on the main menu.

As you continue to win, you will gain credits and boosters that allow you to upgrade the aesthetics of your cards. As you upgrade, you will gain collection points that will help you climb a prize ladder.

Within this prize ladder, you can unlock the Spotlight Cache. Each week, the game will highlight three cards and you can obtain one at random every 100 or so collection points. The cache changes every week.

This method is slow but is the way to go if you do not want to spend actual money within the game. There are, however, options that involve spending real world money.

Each month, there is a themed season that correlates with new cards. For April, the theme is Thunderbolts and each week provides a chance to pick up newly released cards.

Players can spend their money to quickly enhance their cards and work toward multiple Spotlight Caches, increasing their chance of new cards. I don’t spend money and usually unlock one Spotlight Cache a week but I know those who pay tend to get multiple keys in a week.

Players can also obtain Collector’s Tokens that allow them to purchase featured cards. These tokens, however, are hard to come by unless you fork out your money to buy them.

The season-specific prize ladder also offers new cards.

Variants and Other Items

Another alternative way to get cards involves picking up variants. These are cards you already own but the picture differs from the base card. This can be a fun way to personalize your deck.

You can grab variants in the Collection Levels, the store, and as prizes from the conquest modes. Sometimes, Marvel Snap will host a partnership with Twitch and will reward variants if you watch streamers for a certain amount of time.

The store is the easiest but most expensive way to obtain variants. Each day, there is a collection of variants of cards you already own. You can exchange gold for these variants.

You can win gold via the Collection Levels, in the Conquest Store, or by purchasing it. The variants range from more realistic looking cards to specific artists to themed ones such as Chibi or sports variants.

You can also use Collector’s Tokens to exchange for variants along with new cards. The season-specific ladder offers prizes variants as well.

The Final Turn

The actual game of Marvel Snap is pretty simple and a lot of fun to play. The various collectables and modes around it tend to be a lot but get a lot easier the more you go.

Whether you decide to spend on microtransactions or not, you can still have a lot of fun building your deck and playing with your favorite Marvel characters.

How you build your deck, however, is up to you.
