While attending day three of PAX West in Seattle, we had the chance to attend the VR demo of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic. The demo is part of the pre-alpha build, according to game designer Cory Patton, who served as our guide during the experience.
The lead up to the game demo was incredible. The line snaked through a mini-build of the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, which featured a lifelike replica of Jackie, the antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, as well as a photo opportunity to stand in front of a miniature elevator shaft with Eclipse peering out. After you take the photo, it provides an instant jump scare with the classic FNAF sound effect.

When it was our turn to play, we were led inside behind the classic red curtain and over to our own private security room area, with a viewing screen for other members of our party and one PlayStation VR2.
The gameplay experience mostly revolved around being chased through crawlspaces or over catwalks while the terrifying Jackie brought chaos and death at every turn.
As someone who normally gets motion sickness by the less-than-stellar programming and game design of many VR games, I was impressed by how smooth and immersive Secret of the Mimic was. There was no choppy movement or location jumps that often mar VR experiences. Instead, I felt completely immersed as I rushed to pull levers or turn cranks in order to escape the pursuing terrors around me.
Game designer Cory Patton expressed joy at getting to see people’s reactions to the levels he helped create, particularly at observing the shock and terror (and often delight) of players as they encountered jump scares he knew were coming.
Speaking of the many hours spent designing the levels during the programming phase of development, he said, “All that time, we don’t get to see reactions. It’s just so nice to finally watch people play.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is set to release in 2025, though the game still has some work to be done before it’s ready to go live.
