With the recent announcement of the Switch 2 from Nintendo, many fans have had mixed reviews on it as a whole. From excitement at the new games like Mario Kart World, and Donkey Kong Bananza, to slight dejection and vehement push back at the prices for consoles and games alike, the wave post announcement has been massive and engaging to witness.
However, with a new Nintendo console comes wonder if there will be remakes of old games or if certain older generation games will be imported into the new system. If I am being completely honest, I believe that Nintendo has an opportunity to do something big with this console.
As of late, many old titles from all kinds of systems have been getting remade with the new generation graphics. From titles such as Silent Hill 2, Persona 3: Reload, Resident Evil 2 and 3, many of these beloved franchises have been reintroduced into the current era of gaming with open arms from new and returning fans. I believe that these remakes have been some of the hardest hitters as of recently and that it is a trend that probably won’t go away for a while as studios continue to capitalize on the nostalgia factor – which is why I think Nintendo should remake some of their own games.
Now, I don’t just mean what Game Freak has been doing with Pokemon, since Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, but I mean old titles that most people have to emulate on their systems in order to play. Little Friends: Dogs & Cats is close, but imagine the shock and happiness of bringing back Nintendogs – a continued plea among many fans on Reddit – or the joy of introducing the younger generation to games to test your skill like Cooking Mama, which can be made more engaging with the full body movements you can do with the Switch and Switch 2 as a whole.
Even remasters could be alright, but there is a whole market of classic Nintendo DS and 3DS games that many fans still recall and remember fondly, a whole untapped market that Nintendo has yet to utilize in any of their previous systems. I mean, personally, I still have my old 3DS to play some older games that I loved and still love greatly, and that isn’t also including my old Nintendo DS that has seen better days. If Nintendo is okay putting aside funds to make remakes and remasters of older Pokémon games like Brilliant Diamond and Shimmering Pearl (and that’s not including upcoming Legends: Z-A or previous installment Legends: Arceus) then why not continue to use that momentum to lure more old fans of the Nintendo systems back?
I mean, who wouldn’t want the chance to relive the joy of owning a digital dog that you can train and pet and love, or the opportunity to put your culinary skills to the test? Nintendo can definitely do it, they have the resources, the nostalgia factor is just waiting to be utilized.
