PAX East 2025: ItsyRealm is a Delightful Surprise

ItsyRealm is a single-player-focused RPG by Rat Skull Media that blends classic exploration, crafting, and monster-slaying with a vibrant, cozy visual style. Developed with charm and challenges in equal measure, this is a game that invites you into a deceptively cute world teetering on the edge of cosmic destruction. Let’s dive into why ItsyRealm stands out at PAX East.

In ItsyRealm, you embark on a quest to uncover the truth behind a magical god known only as the Empty King. From ancient ruins to dense forests and open waters, your journey spans a world of mythical monsters and mysterious allies. But beneath the pixel charm lies a darker truth: should you fail, the four Old Ones will rip reality apart.

Armed with a sword, staff, or bow (or sometimes all three), you can switch between combat styles mid-fight. Combine that with over 21 skills for gathering, crafting, and combat, and ItsyRealm becomes a charming yet surprisingly deep RPG.

The gameplay loop in ItsyRealm thrives on its rhythm: fight, gather, craft, repeat. It sounds simple, but that’s where the magic lies. One minute you’re mining ore, the next you’re crafting a new piece of armor, and before long, you’re standing toe-to-toe with an eldritch monstrosity, juggling your class mid-battle to dodge its next attack. This definitely gives you a time when you were younger and had a chance to play games like Paper Mario or RuneScape on a school night.

Combat is fluid and responsive. You can switch classes during fights, creating a kind of real-time strategy mechanic that rewards foresight and flexibility. A staff user can open with an area-of-effect attack, then quickly switch to a sword for close-range burst damage. It’s exhilarating—and necessary—especially in boss encounters where timing and positioning are everything. This gave me feel a sense of modern gaming when you are picking on a generation that has seen it all. This was very new and exciting to try to figure out these mechanics.

Outside combat, the 21 skills available range from classic RPG gathering (fishing, mining, chopping) to detailed artisan crafts like cooking and blacksmithing. The progression system feels natural, and seeing your character slowly grow into a powerhouse through resource management is deeply satisfying.

Let’s be real—ItsyRealm is adorable. From the soft pixel art to the charming enemy designs, everything in this game feels handmade with love. The environments pop with vibrant colors, and every new biome feels like flipping through a new page of a fantasy storybook.

The sound design is cozy, albeit minimalistic. The background music never steals the show, but it supports the tone of the game well. I didn’t find it repetitive, nor was it chaotic. This gave me a chance to take a breath in playing. Still, it matches the aesthetic and never feels out of place.

Overall, the ItsyRealm demo was a delightful surprise. With its adorable aesthetic and deceptively deep systems, it will offer a compelling RPG experience for fans of crafting, exploring, and tactical combat. The UI and pacing could use polish, but the heart of the game is solid.

Whether you’re fishing by the sea, forging a new weapon, or preparing to face an abomination summoned by the Empty King, ItsyRealm manages to keep things fresh and satisfying. It’s one of those games that quietly asks you to stay a little longer—and rewards you when you do. If you enjoy cozy yet challenging RPGs, this one is absolutely worth your time.

Release date is still TBD, but there is a demo currently available on Steam. Check it out as well as the trailer below:
