Unsent is a 3-D platformer created by SlimeWare and Red Rabbit games, which is scheduled to come out on Steam October 20. You play as Valentine, the newest delivery man in a 1970s-inspired post office and are tasked to work in the Unsentiment Department. Your job is to dive deep into the office and find letters that were unsent, but should have been sent to their recipient.
Psychonauts was the clear inspiration of the game as you see traces of it in the game’s artstyle and humor. The dialog is witty and full of nihilistic humor that only people who have worked for a corporation will fully appreciate. I found myself laughing at the various jokes, such as a staff worker who was crushed and dying under a filing cabinet, but didn’t want help because this was the first break they have had in a long while, or that your character is considered an “at risk” applicant because there was a forty-eight-hour gap in their resume.
The platforming’s unique gimmick is a triple jump mechanic that you can do by doing a double job, a midair dash, followed by another jump. There are also a lot of collectables to be found by platforming off the beaten path.
My only complaint would be that you have to land directly on a coin to collect it. I found myself having to turn around to grab a coin that Valentine jumped over when he initiated a dash. Other than that, I think this game is a welcomed attempt to fill up the need for more 3-D platformers.
