Kojima productions was founded in 2005 by creator of the Metal Gear series Hideo Kojima. They were originally a subsidiary of Konami, but their contract ended with them which led them to be an independent studio in 2015. Almost immediately after Kojima announced that they would develop a new franchise for PlayStation, thus was the birth of Death Stranding.
Upon its release in September 2019, Death Stranding released a warm reception and favorable reviews; now they have a Director’s Cut in development for PlayStation 5. During an interview with gameindustry.biz, Kojima Productions head of publishing Jay Boor had mentioned that they have sold over 5 million copies of Death Stranding across PlayStation and PC.

These sales makes the game comparable to some of their recent big titles such as Ghost of Tsushima (6.5 million units sold) and Spiderman: Miles Morales (4 million units sold).
