We all love to celebrate games in some way. We play them, write about them, talk about them, and share them with others–the list goes on forever. It is only natural that we celebrate them through awards and other means such as The Game Awards. Why? Because video games are a fun pastime that are a part of peoples lives.
The Game Awards were founded by video game and media-enthusiast, Geoff Keighley, in 2014. This annual event that takes place in early December each year is an awards show that honors the hard-working men and women who create wonderful stories, satisfying gameplay, stunning visuals, and beautiful music throughout the industry. Though I love to tune into this every year, I always ponder the fact about why this show does not take place in January.
This year, we have The Game Awards on December 9th. Why are The Game Awards not in January so that titles that come out late November and the entirety of December can be included into the show? In the past, we had Super Smash Brothers Ultimate come out on December 7th, 2018, a day after The Game Awards that took place. You would think that you would want to include all of 2021 releases in an awards show?
This year, a few games will miss the cutoff, most notably Halo Infinite on December 8th and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge on December 17th. I do not know if these games will be the best in any of the categories that The Game Awards vote on, but I feel they should get a fair shot to be included into the mix.
What is the reasoning behind a December show–is it because its six months from E3, or is it based on some scheduling reasons? What ever the reason, I’m still glad we have an event like this.
What are your thoughts on The Game Awards? Would you like to see them schedule it differently or do you think early December is a great spot for it? What improvements do you want to see and what needs to change from previous Game Awards? What is your game of the year?
