Sad Wolverine Makes us Smile With New Sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series

A sequel to the classic X-Men: The Animated Series entitled X-Men ’97, was revealed today by Disney in a unique fashion. They embraced the meme known as “Sad Wolverine,” a scene from the original animated cartoon, to announce that it will be coming in 2023.

The lead writer will be Beau DeMayo, he will consult with director Larry Houston and showrunners Julia and Eric Lewald on the new series. A list of cast members from the original series will be back for voice acting, though it is worth mentioning that they may take on new roles in the series instead of reprising them.

This will also be the first X-Men related Marvel Studios project since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. It is uncertain the direction in which this show will take, especially with a mash up of irregular episodes from season 5, but I do believe we are in good hands and can most likely avoid looking like sad Wolverine.

What are your thoughts? Have you watched the original series? Are you excited for this announcement?
