Scalebound made a lot of waves in the industry when PlatinumGames announced it in partnership with Microsoft. Its unique fantasy world combined with a futuristic sci-fi feel and Platinum’s signature stylized action had a lot of people thinking of the possibilities. When the game was canceled, many fans were disappointed and blamed Microsoft, partially because of the negative state Xbox found itself in after launch.

This past weekend, PlatinumGames’ president Atsushi Inaba discussed the cancellation of Scalebound and how Hideki Kamiya always wanted to make the game, acknowledging the mistakes the studio made during development.

Here’s the full statement from Kamiya:

“We did a lot of work on it, and it’s no use Microsoft keeping the game in its current form, so we’d like to do something about it (laughs). Phil! Let’s do it together!”

Kamiya apologized for the cancelation of Scalebound and letting Microsoft take the fall back in 2020, saying that “we weren’t experienced enough and couldn’t get over that wall, leading to what happened in the end.”
