Boss Rush Banter: Which Controller Is Best for Playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

So who do you main? That’s the question most Smash Bros. players ask first when talking shop with other fans of the franchise. Are you a Link main? Is Meta Knight overpowered? But just as important as which fighter a player prefers is the method of control they’re most accustomed to.

For most Smash Bros. players, particularly those who lean towards the competitive end of the spectrum, they have thousands of hours of muscle memory programmed into their hands and fingers. It becomes critical then, with regards to earning a victory, to play on the right controller. So, for today’s Boss Rush Banter, we ask you reader: Which controller is best for playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Pro Controller

In terms of controllers designed for the Nintendo Switch, the Pro Controller is certainly preferred by many players. It’s comfortable, its size and weight fill out the space between hands in a way that the Joy-Cons simply can’t, and its buttons are large enough to ensure no accidents in the heat of combat.

Joy-Cons

Yes . . . you people exist. Somehow, inexplicably, some players prefer to play Smash Bros. with the Joy-Con controllers. Now perhaps you grew up playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii, so you might have used a Wiimote and Nunchuck; if you’re one of those, you get a pass for playing with two Joy-Cons vertically. But if you play with a single Joy-Con horizontally, well . . . we don’t know what to say.

GameCube Controller

For most old-school Smash Bros. players, the pinnacle of gaming controllers is the GameCube design. Jump buttons above the attack ones, C-Stick at the ready, and years of muscle memory programmed in. Thankfully there are a number of aftermarket and independent companies that have produced GameCube controllers for the Nintendo Switch, so you can enjoy that same feeling wirelessly.

Tell us what you think! What’s the best controller to use when playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Share your reactions in the comments below or join the conversation on Boss Rush Network’s Discord and Facebook.

I grew up playing Smash specifically with the Wavebird wireless controllers on the Gamecube, and they were the best! They fit my hands and were really responsive, and just FELT nice, you know? Some controllers just have that quality. 🙂
