Boss Rush Banter: I Actually Like the Updated Look to the Princess Peach Showtime! Box Art

Leave it to the fans to notice even the slightest change. Discussions lit up on X (aka. Twitter) and Reddit; it seems that Princess Peach Showtime’s box art was updated to resemble more like the character model from The Super Mario Bros. Movie. When I looked at the differences, I actually liked the update.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a blockbuster, and with comments from Doug Bowser that Nintendo aims to be an entertainment company, it makes sense to me that future Mario games may veer toward the movie’s art style when it comes to the characters. It may not be everything all at once, but updating Princess Peach makes the most sense to start with.

Firstly, this Princess Peach doesn’t have a game of her own. Okay, okay, she did have that one game, Super Princess Peach, where the primary mechanic was her emotions…but other than that, this is Peach’s prime time to shine. She had a strong showing in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and she has the potential to be a role model to a new generation of girls and young women.

For those that aren’t in tune with video games, recognizing Princess Peach from The Super Mario Bros. Movie can be a net positive to drive more sales to Princess Peach Showtime!.

Finally, I personally think the updated Princess Peach image is simply better. It appears to have more depth and detail, rather than a blank, smiling face looking directly at you. I feel that it “modernizes” Peach while keeping most other things (such as her pink dress) traditional. While I tend to be a traditionalist, I think this was a nice touch!

I don’t mind the change either (I appreciate that her expression has more personality), but I also can’t help but notice that her face more closely resembles her movie counterpart. 🤔
