Nintendo Releases Final Trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Nintendo has entered the home stretch for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The gaming company released the final trailer for the movie during the March 9 Nintendo Direct, which also featured comments from Nintendo and Illumination staff as well as the cast. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to release on April 5 in theaters.

The direct aired on March 9 in the U.S., which was March 10 or Mario Day in Japan. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said he believed this was the perfect day to release the final trailer.

The trailer was about a minute and a half and began with Luigi in a cage in Bowser’s castle. It showed other characters in hanging cages including what appeared to be a Luma from Super Mario Galaxy.

The Mario Kart portion of the movie featured heavily with Mario, Peach, and other characters racing on what appears to be Rainbow Road.

Other spots from the movie included Mario and Donkey Kong platforming, Bowser rallying his armies, and Peach getting into the fray for the impending confrontation with Bowser and his minions.

Miyamoto clarified that the movie was out of post production and is complete. He said there are plans to localize the movie still for other regions.

Along with the final trailer, the direct also featured comments from the cast, which included Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong), Jack Black (Bowser), and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad).

Illumination Head Chris Melendandri, along with directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, was on hand to provide insight into the movie’s production.

Melendandri said over 600 people worked on the film, which pushed Illumination’s technical graphics and artistic departments to their limits. Horvath and Jelenic also spoke about the choice to use Rainbow Road in the movie and how they used the games as inspiration.

The direct finished with Miyamoto announcing that the shoes Mario wears in the movie will be on sale at the Nintendo Store in New York City.

Nintendo has steadily released trailers with a teaser during New York Comic Con and one during a Nintendo Direct in late 2022. There was also a movie clip during The Game Awards in 2022.

The movie has sparked a lot of excitement, especially regarding the portrayal of Princess Peach, among fans. There initially was a lot of controversy surrounding the casting of Chris Pratt as Mario
