In a Nintendo Direct, featured live at New York Comic Con, Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri spoke ahead of the Super Mario Bros. trailer. Miyamoto thanked the audience for playing Mario games for almost forty years and described how closely Nintendo worked with Illumination across the entire movie making process, which has been seven years thus far.
As Chris Meledandri spoke, you can see Mario trinkets on his shelf in the background–from a mushroom to a question block–mixed in with all the other Illumination IPs. He also confirmed that they are wrapping up with animation in the next week, including final touches on lighting and compositing. In about 11 days, composer Brian Tyler will be working on musical scoring–and the most exciting news, partnering with Koji Kondo to integrate classic themes into the movie.

Finally, before pulling back the curtains on the trailer, Chris Pratt and Jack Black briefly shared memories of their childhood playing Mario games and their experience working on this movie.
