Boss Rush Banter: Did the September Nintendo Direct Signify the Switch’s Final Year?

2–3 minutes

Even after the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct, Nintendo still brought fans the larger Direct for September. Per usual, the live chat was flooded with both excitement and toxic commentary. Regardless of whether you loved or hated it, did Nintendo’s latest lineup prove the Switch is in its final year?

For a full breakdown of the September Nintendo Direct, check out our lovely recap by the only and only Eddie V. No one can deny the sheer number of new announcements, trailers, and release dates squashed in the 40 minute time frame, but most can agree there was no major “tent-pole” title for the Winter 2024.

Finally. Something F-Zero fans can do on the Switch!

Remakes, re-tellings, and remasters dominated the September Direct with Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, Tomb Raider 1-3, Contra Operation Galuga, and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Some of these will release as late as summer 2024, so I wouldn’t say the next Nintendo Switch is months away; however, the lack of any major first party IP trailers, let alone announcements, do hint that Nintendo is winding down ol’ faithful.

Here’s the thing, I don’t think Nintendo wants to let the the Switch go silently into the night. I feel the several Mario-themed releases is also intentional due to the recent success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Nintendo’s statement that they want to evolve into an entertainment company. The Nintendo Switch is also sitting high as the second top selling game console of all time at 129.53 million units, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the company hopes to edge the PlayStation 2 (at 157 million units) off its number one seat.

With all this said, I interpret this Direct as Nintendo doubling down on Mario and establishing their legacy with the next generation of gamers while savings major first party games for the next console. “Switch 2” is coming, but Nintendo provided plenty of titles to keep us busy until then.
