Boss Rush Banter: Will Wuthering Waves Topple Genshin Impact’s Throne?

Wuthering Waves is an upcoming open world game by Kuro Game that has been compared to Hoyoverse’s Genshin Impact since it was announced. There are a few similarities between the two games: the gacha system, characters and character types, the open world, the gameplay style, and reward system. Genshin Impact has been incredibly successful since its release in 2020. Since then, there have been multiple other games that tried to reach the same level of success.

None have quite reached it.

While Wuthering Waves is still only available for pre-registration, beta players have already noticed multiple similarities and differences between the two. Some similarities include; the abilities of the characters, the stamina and ability to glide, how to obtain characters, and more. However, the differences provide Wuthering Waves a chance to reach the same success, if not greater, then Genshin Impact.

Some differences include, but are not limited to, the weapon banner. In Genshin Impact, the weapon banner has different weapon types that can be given to your character. The main weapons advertised on the banner are limited five-stars and specific to certain characters. Genshin Impact guarantees a five-star at 90 wishes but the player can still lose the 50/50 to a five-star weapon the player did not wish for. The player is not guaranteed the advertised weapon until after they’ve lost the 50/50 twice to non-limited five star weapons and after that they still have to reach pity. Pity, in general, is the point in a gacha game where you are guaranteed a limited character or weapon. There are two types of pity: soft and hard. For Genshin Impact, soft pity starts around 70 wishes in, hard is when the player reaches the guaranteed five star at 90 wishes. The lost 50/50s accumulates as Fate Points, which reset upon the next weapon banner with new advertised weapons.

In Wuthering Waves, as of the 2nd Closed Beta, the player is guaranteed to gain the advertised weapon upon reaching pity. The banner pity, at this point of time, for both character and weapon is 80. The soft pity point has not yet been determined. As for some other differences, Wuthering Waves has animations for switching characters that provides a seamless transition as well as the ability to wall run. Something that Genshin Impact does not have. However, Genshin Impact does have underwater exploration and, as of this point in time, Wuthering Waves doesn’t.

As Wuthering Waves is not out yet, it is difficult to tell if this game will be as successful as Genshin Impact. However, they already have over 10 million preregistrations. All this points to it being a contender for Genshin Impact and perhaps even some healthy competition as, during its preregistration period, Genshin Impact had also reached 10 million preregistrations.

Genshin Impact has been needing competition and Wuthering Waves is the perfect game to do so. The gameplay of Wuthering Waves, while being similar, has key differences that creates a more enjoyable time for the player. In addition, the weapon banner on Wuthering Waves is more free-to-play friendly. It allows for less grinding and more time to play with the characters. If any game will topple Genshin Impact from its throne, Wuthering Waves seems to be the one that can manage it.

Wuthering Waves currently has no release date, but is expected to come out this year.

What do you think? Do you think Wuthering Waves will become competition for Genshin Impact? Do you think Wuthering Waves will take the throne? Or will Genshin Impact continue to dominate the open world gacha games? Tell us what you think in the comments below or join the conversation on the Boss Rush Discord!
