Miniature Master Trish Carden Speaks About Her Dark Fairy Tale Creations

Trish Carden is best known for her many beloved, famous miniatures produced for Games Workshop and its ventures. Recently, however, she has jumped wholeheartedly into her own setting: HarrowHyrst, a dark fairy tale world with a strong inspiration from language and history.

“I didn’t want to do anything that you might call the ‘oldhammer’ vibe, in a way. Because that’s really what I love to make, you know,” she said in an interview with Filmdeg Miniatures. “The trolls, the treemen, the dragons, all these kind of things. So HarrowHyrst was born. It gives me an opportunity to just have ideas, sketch them out, make them. …

“What I do is I start with a sort of place. For me, it was a forest, my happy place…I wanted to make all the creatures you see in this forest. The land started to [form]. Swamps here. And there’s going to be other bits round and about. I just started making things. There’s no kind of huge plan with it; it’s very much a ‘oh, this idea leads to this idea.'”

Much of the inspiration also emerges from the real world.

“It’s like my head is full of my own little world now,” she said. “And the side thing of that is, as well, is I’ve got a fascination for old words, language. So the names for things are from old names, like Pobblebonk the Frog. That’s an old English name for frog. Quakebuttock, which is one of the trolls, that’s a coward. That’s an old word for coward.”

The endlessly charming Harrowhyrst miniatures can be found at Footsore Miniatures and Games.
