Players can enter the Zone and lead mutants, animals, or robots as “they struggle to turn the rot-infested wasteland into a new dawnland.” Mutant Year Zero: Zone Wars is a tabletop wargame with a two-faction core box, and an expansion Robots & Psionics which provides an additional two factions and a campaign.
The game is compatible with the Mutant: Year Zero tabletop RPG. Players can translate their character into a wargame combatant, or continue the Zone Wars scenarios in the RPG.
Mutant Year Zero: Zone Wars is developed by notable creators, including Andy Chambers (best known for Necromunda, among a long career of highlights), Tomas Härenstam (a Free League Publishing mainstay who played key roles in games like Mutant: Year Zero, and ALIEN RPG), and Nils Karlén (Coriolis: The Third Horizon, Forbidden Lands). The miniatures are sculpted by veterans Alejandro Muñoz Martín and Daniel BlueIce.
The miniatures are made in 32 mm format and require no assembly. They are sundropped at the factory as a standard, meaning that they will be table-ready right out of the box.
The Mutant Year Zero: Zone Wars core set includes: ten detailed 32 mm miniatures (five each for the Ark Mutants and the Genlab Tribe), cards, tokens, dice, a game mat, cardboard terrain, a ruler, and a rulebook including five full scenarios, campaign rules, character generation rules, and solo rules.
The Mutant Year Zero: Zone Wars Robots & Psionics expansion set includes: ten detailed 32 mm miniatures (five each for the Mechatron Hive and the Nova Cult), cards, tokens, dice, a game mat, cardboard terrain, a ruler, and a scenario booklet including five full scenarios.
What can players expect from the rules?
The game rules are easy to grasp and makes for a fast-playing experience. Just like in the Mutant: Year Zero RPG, the core mechanic is based on pools of six-sided dice, and you need at least a six to hit your target. You can push yourself for a re-roll, increasing your chances but risking damage to your weapon in the process.
The initiative systems keeps all players constantly on their toes, and powerful mutations and robot modules can turn the balance quickly even for a losing faction. Zone cards are drawn to represent the many dangers of the Zone, which can mean the ruin of even the most hardened Stalker!
…It is all about embracing mayhem and emergent narrative to create a fun and fast-flowing experience…
Mutant: Year Zero is the latest version of the classic Swedish tabletop roleplaying game Mutant, first published in 1984. It was the very first game created by Free League that released to an international audience in 2014 and was an instant hit – named Best RPG at UK Games Expo 2015 and awarded a Silver ENNIE for Best Rules at Gen Con 2015.
Mutant: Year Zero – Zone Wars and the Robots & Psionics expansion is available at the Free League webshop and will soon be on shelves at retailers worldwide.
