Capcom Makes Two Big Fighting Game Collection Announcements During Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase

During today’s (27 Aug, 2024) Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, Capcom let loose with a combo of details surrounding two highly-anticipated collections: Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, and Capcom Fighting Collection 2.

Starting with the former, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection has been building hype throughout the year as it marks the first time the seminal, and much-adored, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will be widely available since the series flamed out after the complicated life of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. As of today, the hype can hit a fever pitch with an official release date:

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will drop on September 12 digitally, with a physical edition coming November 22. This news is even a bit of scoop for Nintendo since the PlayStation listing for the game updated to include a release date after today’s Direct.

As for Marvel Fighting Collection 2, fighting game fans will be thrilled to find more gems from what was arguably the end of Capcom’s golden age, both in arcades and on home consoles. The second numbered entry in the Collection series features enormous crowd-pleasers from the PS2 and Dreamcast. Here is the official list of games:

  • Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro
  • Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001
  • Capcom Fighting Evolution
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 UPPER
  • Project Justice
  • Power Stone
  • Power Stone 2
  • Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein

Standing out in that crowd are more hard-to-find legacy titles such as the Capcom vs. SNK titles. Power Stone was a landmark release for the Dreamcast and offers a unique spin on fighting game convention. It pulls influence from the beat ’em up genre as well as specific gameplay mechanics from titles as disparate as Bushido Blade and Super Smash Bros. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 will release sometime in 2025

Both collections benefit from the bevy of quality-of-life upgrades that Capcom has worked hard to include on all fighting games since the Street Fighter V era. Namely, rollback netcode for stable online play, simplified inputs for specials, customizable graphic filters, swappable region aesthetics, and historic galleries to help inform new players of these games’ legacies.
