Boss Rush Banter: These Gaming Presentations Do More For My Backlog Than My Future

Another Sony State of Play has come and gone, and I am left in the same place as always, thinking about my backlog.

Don’t get me wrong, these presentations always pique my interest to the future in some way, shape, or form. I enjoy seeing new trailers even if they don’t add much of substance. It’s just fun to me.

All that said, these presentations always draw my attention to my backlog rather than what I want to get. It does this by reminding me of what I want to play before I get to these new games.

Take the most recent Sony State of Play. The biggest news coming out of that presentation is Ghost of Yōtei, the long-awaited Ghost of Tsushima sequel.

Everything about this game looked gorgeous and I am excited to play it. However, it didn’t take long for my mind to wander back to my backlog as I remembered I still needed to play the first game.

The same thing happened when I saw the Death Stranding 2 trailer, the Octopath Traveler 2 announcement, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

While it might feel overwhelming, it does help my prioritize my backlog. For example, Ys X Nordics is heading Westward and that has caused me to put Ys IX closer to the front of the playlist over other games.

It really is a weird phenomena that I’m sure the publishers don’t really intend, especially since I’ve already bought the game so it’s not like they’re getting more money out of me.

Honestly, I’m OK with this too. Sometimes, I feel like my backlog reminds me of the Netflix issue where I have so many options that I don’t know what to watch. That same is true of my backlog.

I do like these presentations because they help shape my backlog a bit. Where I might’ve waited for Ghost of Tsushima, I think it’s next on my list or at least closer to the top.

Where the issues arise is when these presentations draw my interest to games I don’t yet have, but now am interested in. That absolutely happened last month when a new Atelier game was announced.

Look, I get it. The State of Play was not what many wanted it to be. I understand that. For me, I like to find the positives that come and this time around, that is yet another revision to my backlog order.

The best part? By the time I get there, it’ll be time for the next Nintendo Direct, which means another chance to reorder my backlog. It’s a never-ending shell game that I can never win!

What about you? Do these online presentations make you reorder your backlog priorities? Do you even think about your backlog when these presentations come out? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord channel to join the conversation.
