Boss Rush Banter: Did Nintendo’s Latest Indie World Showcase Miss the Mark?

Are we looking at a case of quantity over quality? That’s a hard conversation to have when looking at gaming titan, Nintendo, a company that prides in top-notch quality. Within two weeks, they hosted a Partner Direct as well as an Indie Showcase. The latter aired Thursday, August 7th, and while the enjoyment of such showcases is subjective based on viewer expectation, I was left asking myself if the latest Indie World Showcase missed its mark.

Perhaps I was still riding the high of a Partner Direct, but I felt that the August 7th Indie World Showcase felt like a wet fart…pardon my French. The Showcase lasted only 15 minutes long and featured (somehow) 18 games. For context, Nintendo combined a Partner and Indie Showcase this time last year. It lasted about 43 minutes and featured 18 indie games. In April 2024, a standalone Indie World Showcase lasted about 23 minutes and announced 17 games. A November 2023 Indie World Showcase announced 18 games. If you look at numbers alone, the recent Indie Showcase is staying consistent with number of games featured; however, this certainly has been one of the shortest presentations.

Perhaps it was the brief showing that influenced how I felt. I also felt a little disappointed by the announcements–not that they were boring games by any means! However, it’s hard to get excited about games that have already been out for a while. For example, Content Warning has been available on Steam since April 2024, and UFO 50 (an awesome game) has been on Steam since September 2024. While it’s not new for Nintendo to get ports at a later date, it contributed to a rather stale feeling to this Showcase. To add to this, several games have already been announced and shown in various platforms for quite some time, including but not limited to: Mina the Hollower, Herdling, Winter Burrow, and Is This Seat taken? Alls that is to say, out of the list of 18 games, the majority are either already out or have been announced for a while. There just seemed to be a lack of fresh announcements, which made the already short duration feel like a huge let down.

I’m psyched for Mina the Hollower! However, this isn’t new news.

One final factor is due to rise in popularity of indie focused showcases such as the Wholesome Direct, Day of the Devs, Six One Indie Showcase, and much more–and they all do a fantastic job. We now have outlets that focus on indie games, and they tend to have quite the variety at their fingertips to share with the audience. Their showings make Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase look pale by comparison.

I do wonder if Nintendo felt the need to squeeze this Indie World Showcase before they launch their main event, a first-party Nintendo Direct–something that most fans are crying for. The first-party pipeline is scarce, and even known titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond still has no release date. In my opinion, Nintendo could have easily combined the Partner Direct and Indie World Showcase together, so long as there were no contracts that dictated when these announcements could’ve been made.

As a massive indie game lover as well as Nintendo fan, this sense of disappointment makes me feel a little guilty. I always celebrate any indie game (and there were several I have played or plan to play) and generally defend Nintendo, but this recent Showcase truly let me down. And while you can’t please everybody, I do feel that Nintendo did miss the mark with this latest Indie World Showcase (and not just because Silksong wasn’t on it).
